Mike Chapman
Mike Chapman is proof that professionals from non-tech sectors can adapt and even thrive in the new media landscape. The principles of being open and genuine, considering customers as humans, remaining open to constant feedback and criticism, and being completely willing to trade old ways of thinking for new ones, have made Mike an enthusiast for social media. It may sound ironic that a former Washington lobbyist and Congressional staffer would be eager to specialize in communications based on honesty and authenticity rather than promotion, but those are the exact qualities that drew him into the field of new media and communications.
Mike is a cofounder of the Austin Social Media Club and the international Social Media Club. As a principal and founder of Every Dot Connects - a social media consortium - Mike works with clients who have an interest in governmental affairs and some who do not. In either case, Mike brings his enthusiasm for finding new and better ways to communicate, remembering that the very best communicators he has worked with were those who knew how to listen most effectively. Mike’s career started with the late J.J.”Jake” Pickle as part of his Washington D.C. staff, and has included stints with current U.S. Senator Tim Johnson, the National Association of Realtors, the American Medical Association, and Texas State University. His roles at Every Dot Connects include communications strategist, blogger and online community addict.

I know everyone on this list works for a nonprofit that has fundraisers and I wouldn't want to see every one of them posted here, but ChannelAustin has hosted the 501 Tech Club and helped us out in a number of ways. | Presenters: David J. Neff, CIW, Director of Online Communications, and Jerry Markham, Manager of eCommerce-High Plains Division, American Cancer Society, Austin Corporate Office
5:30 - 6:00 Pizza and Networking
6:00 - 7:00 David and Jerry will show you around their virtual compound and explain the basic concepts of the Second Life Relay for Life.
Location: Austin Free-Net Offices and Community Computer Lab at the DeWitty Center, 2209 Rosewood Ave, 2nd Fl, Austin, TX 78702
From Jerry Markham:
Although the ACS involvement with SL goes back to 2005 when the first ever Second Life Relay For Life was held, we recently established a more permanent location by building a compound with a main office, a large room for presentations as well as places for support groups to meet. There are big plans for this office to provide cancer information with docs and brochures people can download, early detection and prevention messages (posters and streaming video PSAs), hosting fundraising or educational events, and much more.
In real-world Relay For Life events, it matters how far a person walks; participants traditionally get sponsors to pledge a per-lap donation.
That's not the way it works in the virtual arena. Along the Relay pathway are short, white posts called luminaries. When a walker clicks a post, a prompt comes up encouraging a donation. There are also many other fundraising activities going on before the event offering RFL Kiosks to make donations. Payment is made in Linden Dollars, the currency of Second Life, but since the company behind the whole program, Linden Labs, supports a real-world currency exchange it can be turned into U.S. dollars for the American Cancer Society.
The first SLRFL was attended by a few hundred avatars and raised almost $5000. 2006 got much bigger and raised over $40,000 from more than 1,100 participants. 2007 took place on July 27 and was expecting nearly 2,500 individuals to attend. Hopefully, we'll have the results in time for the meetup.
There is some great information about other ways the ACS has created unique events for fundraising at the website www.slrfl.com. The majority of these are participant driven, as is the entire Second Life virtual world. Basic memberships are free and the Search button along the bottom allows you to look up places and events by name, then you simply "transport" to them.
